Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of SAUNI Yojna which covers 10 dams, out of the four phases on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, The PM reached to the venue by road instead of planned air journey due to bad weather condition from Jamnagar where he landed by an Air Force Plane.
In presence of Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel Honourable PM pressed the button to say a go to the Project. This project was launched by him in September 2012 costing to 1200 crores, when he was chaired as the Chief Minister of Gujrat.
Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation – SAUNI Yojna project aims at diverting the floodwater from Sardar Sarovar Dam to several dams of the water scarce Saurashtra region though a network of canal and pipelines and other techniques.
PM Narendra Modi Twitted and said: “Looking forward to being in Gujarat today for the launch of SAUNI Yojana. This scheme will truly benefit the people of Gujarat.”

This project will help in filling 115 small and big reservoirs of 11 districts. This would help with irrigation of 4.13 lakh hectares land in drought-prone Saurashtra.
Under the scheme, irrigation department of the state government would connect various dams with the help of pipelines of about three meters in diameter. The first 180 km link, the second 253, third 245 and fourth 250 km long.
Reportedly 700 state transport buses and 200 private buses were used to transmit janta to the venue to make the event as grand one. PM Narendra Modi will also be addressing a rally in Jamnagar after launching SAUNI Project.
